David Ronald Smith (Smitty, Papa, Ron), 65, resident of
Hesperia for 12 years and former Pomona resident of 53 years, passed
away peacefully at home Sept. 18, 2007. He courageously tried to
overcome a sudden battle with a fierce disease that took our beloved
loved one too quickly.
He was born and raised in Pomona to Elizabeth and Floyd Smith. He was
the youngest of seven siblings and is survived by all of them. He
married the love of his life, Eleanor Smith, and celebrated 40 years of
marriage July 28, 2007.
He is survived by his two loving daughters, Julie Prentice and Donna
Anton, and sons-in-law Garry Prentice and Darryl Anton. Papa loved and
adored his grandchildren Austin and Brittney Anton, and Serena,
Stephanie and Derrick Prentice. He is also survived by siblings Barbara,
Bud, Pete, Gerald, Mary and Phyllis, and numerous nieces, nephews and
friends.

Smitty worked at Verizon for 40
years and was looking forward to finally retiring to the great outdoors.
He was one of the longest dinosaurs of GTE/Verizon and with his vast
knowledge was respected and looked up to (literally) by all.
He attended Pomona High School, Mt. San Antonio College, Cal Poly,
Pomona and served in the United States Army. He was a member of the
Aztec Club for many years and a member of the Victor Valley Gold Wing
Association, where he shared the love of the open road.
Papa had such a caring heart, always had time for others, and deeply
loved his wife, daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren. He was always
there to encourage his grandchildren at bowling, soccer, gymnastics,
baseball, basketball, scouts and school programs. He was the epitome of
what a husband/father/grandfather should always be. He enjoyed camping
with his family and the many family get togethers. Papa will be missed
so much. He was not only a husband, father, grandfather, but a true
friend. We will always cherish your love in our hearts forever.
Donations may be made in his name to Veteran's, Salvation Army or
American Cancer Society.
